on violence against women and girls, its causes and consequences, Reem Alsalem
THE VERDICT
Everyone expected that in spite of the Rapporteur's call for submissions on the topic of parental alienation (PA), a biased conclusion would be made. The only question was how much of an attempt would be made to make it appear that all factors were taken into consideration in formulating the report.
True to expectations, the Rapporteur totally dismissed PA as the "discredited and unscientific pseudo-concept of parental alienation". The report only cites the opinions of critics of PA and anecdotal submissions. The large amount of published scientific literature about PA is ignored as well as the large number of submissions that were made to the Rapporteur about the science and validity of PA.
Of note, even though the report states that PA "has been dismissed by medical, psychiatric and psychological associations," it does acknowledge that the DSM-5 contains "a parental relationship distress diagnosis" which "encompasses a range of parental alienation behaviours and outcomes". Apparently, the long-touted claim of PA critics that PA is not in the DSM-5 is no longer important. The critics can now acknowledge that PA is in the DSM-5 and nevertheless claim that it is dismissed by the psychological community.
True to form of PA critics, the report states that:
"In preparing the report, the Special Rapporteur sought contributions from Member States, international and regional organizations, non-governmental organizations, academia and victims, and held a series of online consultations with stakeholders and experts. The Special Rapporteur has received over a thousand submissions, of which a large number were duplicated individual submissions, particularly from fathers’ organizations".
In other words, opposition to the report's anti PA stance is relegated to duplicated submissions by fathers' organizations which are not discussed at all in the report. See the links below to view some of these submissions from various types of groups from across the world.
Page 16 of the report develops a conspiracy theory about PA experts and the lucrative endeavors that they engage in by providing training and expert services. This alleged conspiracy also includes leading academic journals. The Rapporteur states that:
"Academic experts have noted the concerning development whereby reputable academic journals in the field of psychology are publishing articles that promote the notion of “alienating behaviours” without applying the usual standards of scientific rigour in peer review or not allowing a right of response to authors whose studies are the subject of such criticism.
The citation for this allegation is "Expert consultations conducted by the Special Rapporteur". This criticism about not following rigorous standards is ironically sourced as an anonymous citation of "experts."

True scientists will not be fooled by this report. This report is not just a threat to victims of PA, it is a threat to scientific integrity and democracy itself. It is the responsibility of those who value truth, integrity and the welfare of our children to loudly protest this assault against real child protection by a gender-biased agenda. The editorial boards and peer reviewers of prestigious scientific journals should respond to this attack on the integrity of their journals. Let your state, provincial and national governments know about this agenda driven report that masquerades as an objective factfinding report. Contact the UN and your county's UN representatives and protest this report. Together our voices will be heard, and truth will prevail.
